On Wednesday Apple announced the release of the much anticipated iPhone SE. It was rumored to have names such as iPhone 9, iPhone 8 plus or SE 2.

On first glimpse of its features, you can see that its like an iPhone 11 embroidered into an iPhone 8 body. Traditionally, Apple holds events to announce the release of its gadgets. This time they however just announced over a press release due to the coronavirus pandemic.

We are yet to lay our hands on the device, but based upon the promised features, we can judge whether its worth your money and time.
The most attractive feature of this phone is the price tag. It is actually cheaper than the base line i-Phone 11.

So here is what you get (and don’t get) at such a price of $399.

1. Affordability

This phone comes at a time when the value of iPhone 11 is around $699 and the flagship11 Pro and11 Pro Max cost around $999 and $1,099 respectively, and this is a bit unaffordable by people with less disposable income.Having an option such as the iPhone SE which more people can afford is a very wise move by Apple.

This is a big move by Apple to enter the low budget market space which has previously been dominated by flagship companies such as Samsung and Huawei. This move will now force other companies in this market space to up their game due to competition.

The new iPhone SE starts at the exact same $399 price as the original SE.

Refer to the table below for a generalized price structure:

2. Size and design

The iPhone SE is small and compact in comparison to the iPhone 11. The 4.7 inch LCD display makes it more portable, a feature which will attract more buyers.

While the iPhone 11 comes with liquid retina HD display, the iPhone SE has just the retina HD. These are just the branding terms that Apple uses to differentiate its display technology; all you have to know, though, is that the iPhone 11’s screen is sharper, although they both have the same number of pixels-per-inch or pixel density.

3. Home button

The iPhone SE could be the last iPhone edition that we actually see with a physical home button. The home button houses the device’s fingerprint reader for unlocking the phone and digital payments (Touch ID).

4. Water protection

Both the iPhone SE and iPhone 11 are IP certified for water protection but only with a slight difference.

The iPhone 11 is IP rated 68 while the iPhone SE is IP rated 67. This basically means that the iPhone 11 is a bit more durable against submersion (as in, it’s certified to withstand longer or deeper immersion in water).

An IP67 level of certification means that the iPhone SE can survive in up to a meter of water (3.3 feet) for about 30 minutes.

5. Camera

The camera on the iPhone SE is pretty descent, way better than the average Android phone’s camera. It has a single 12 megapixel rear camera which is fairly descent for daily photo shoots or selfies for Instagram.

However, if you are a photographer, the second wider camera of the iPhone 11 will be better for you. The iPhone SE will also come with a 5x digital zoom that uses software to render closeup images.
The front camera has 7 megapixels and can record a video quality of up to 1080p as compared to the 4K capability of the iPhone 11. The front camera of the SE can also record slow motion video.

6. Color

The iPhone SE only comes in black, white and red.

7. Processor and battery

Being a budget phone, you might expect this device to be fitted with a salvaged processor. But the device is equipped with the latest proprietary A13 Bionic chip, the same one that’s inside the iPhone 11.

This means that we should be able to see a similar performance and processing performance speeds, but we can only be sure if we have the iPhone SE in our hands and observe its performance against the promised features.

The battery does not last as long as the iPhone 11’s battery. Its battery capacity is more like the iPhone 8’s which had 1,821-mAh battery according to analysis by some third-parties.

8. Storage

The iPhone SE can be configured with 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of storage.

Specs summary

Based on these features, we think this phone is totally worth your money, especially if you have been wishing to move from Android to IOS.

It is not common to buy a brand new iPhone at such a price. Its time you start saving as you wait for the official product release.
